Speaking to reporters on Friday, President Trump revealed details about his hour-long call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, stating that Putin “is not even looking at all to get involved in Venezuela.”
This claim contradicts what secretary of state Mike Pompeo said earlier in the week that the authoritarian leader of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, had been encouraged by Vladimir Putin to remain in the country against calls from the opposition and its leader, self-declared interim president Juan Guaido, to step down.
Pompeo said on Thursday, “The Russians have people working over there in the hundreds, if not more. These are the folks who are actually controlling the direction of travel for Venezuela.”
The Kremlin has stated that president Putin “underscored that only the Venezuelans themselves have the right to determine the future of their country, whereas outside interference in the country’s internal affairs and attempts to change the government in Caracas by force undermine prospects for a political settlement of the crisis.”
President Trump also revealed that he had spoken to Vladimir Putin about the Mueller report, adding that Mr. Putin said something to the effect of, “it started off as a mountain, it ended up being a mouse.” He added that he and Putin have not talked about election interference.
President Trump also mentioned the upcoming election and his intent to run on the strong economy. This is coming after the release of the latest jobs report stating that 263,000 jobs had been added in April, surpassing the 190,000 estimate made by economists in a Bloomberg survey.
