On Friday, President Donald Trump announced that Immigration and Customs Enforcement would start their raids “on Sunday” in which potentially 2,000 illegal aliens would be apprehended.
“It starts on Sunday and [ICE is] gonna take people out and they’re going to bring them back to their countries or they’re gonna take criminals out, put them in prison, or put them in prison in the countries they came from,” said the president.
“We’re focused on criminals as much as we can,” the president added. “We’re taking them out by the thousands, we’re getting them out.”
These ICE raids would target undocumented immigrants who have received final deportation orders, and undocumented immigrants who happen to be nearby will be swept up as part of “collateral” arrests.
A spokesperson for ICE, Matthew Bourke, said, “As always, ICE prioritizes the arrest and removal of unlawfully present aliens who pose a threat to national security, public safety, and border security…. However, all of those in violation of the immigration laws may be subject to immigration arrest, detention and – if found removable by final order – removal from the United States.”
In a Thursday press conference, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi called the raids “brutal” and that they would “tear families apart.”
“Families belong together, everyone has rights,” said the speaker. “We pray that the president thinks about this.”
10 major cities are expected to face significant raids, including Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New Orleans, New York, and San Francisco. Immigrants who have received final deportation orders are expected to be targeted.
