On Monday, President Donald Trump said he had a secret plan to win the Afghanistan War “in a week” but that he would rather cooperate with regional partners to “extricate” U.S. troops and not risk killing “10 million people.”
“If we wanted to fight a war in Afghanistan and win it, I could win that war in a week,” said the president. “I just don’t want to kill 10 million people.”
The president, speaking with Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan, said, “I have plans on Afghanistan that if I wanted to win that war, Afghanistan would be wiped off the face of the Earth. It would be gone. It would be over in – literally ten days. And I don’t want to do that. I don’t want to go that route.”
Trump said there was “tremendous potential between” the U.S. and Pakistan and said that the Islamic Republic would “help us out to extricate ourselves” from Afghanistan.
“Basically, we’re policemen right now, and we’re not supposed to be policemen,” the president said. “We’ve been there for 19 years in Afghanistan. It’s ridiculous, and I think Pakistan helps us with that because we don’t want to stay as policemen.”
“If we wanted to, we could that war,” the president repeated. “I have a plan that would win that war in a very short period of time, you understand that better than anybody,” he said, turning to Khan.
Trump said that Afghani forces were too busy “building gas stations” and “rebuilding schools” instead of “fighting to win.”
“The United States, we shouldn’t be doing that,” he said. “That’s for them to do. But what we did and what our leadership got us into is ridiculous.”
as a candidate for president, Trump has been vocal about pulling troops from the middle east and abroad and ending years-long conflicts that have scarred such regions.
