Top Democrats: Congress and White house close to reaching a budget deal

July 17, 2019

On Wednesday, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer held a 45-minute meeting and shared optimistic words with reporters about a deal being reached with the White House.

“If we’re going to act by next Thursday, which is what we’d like to do to honor regular order, we have to get something soon so we can post with enough time,” said Pelosi. The House will adjourn next week for the August recess.

The two Democratic leaders had a phone call with Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin during the session.

“We were on the phone with Mnuchin and we’re making progress,” Schumer said. “I’m very hopeful, ok? That’s all I can say.”

For the past week, Pelosi and Mnuchin have been speaking daily, and the two are set to hold more discussions on Thursday.

Pelosi said she wants to pass the deal next Thursday to allow the Senate enough time to act on the deal before the summer recess. Speaking at a press conference, Pelosi said she will try to create a final deal by Friday night.

Democrats have stated that they want any Pentagon funding to be matched by an increase of spending on domestic programs and Pelosi has asked for $22 billion more in funding for veterans programs. Republicans and the White House have asked for decreases in other parts of the deal in order to offset costs, but Democrats have not expressed interest in cutting spending.

When asked about complications surrounding the deal, Pelosi said, “It’s all about money, right?”
