Here’s what Elon Musk wants do to you using Neuralink

July 17, 2019

On Tuesday, Elon Musk announced plans for his company Neuralink to connect human brains directly to computers in an effort to create “symbiosis with artificial intelligence.”

In a presentation to the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, Musk said that achieving that goal “will take a long time” due to difficulties acquiring federal approval for implanted neural devices. But he has noted that animal tests have already begun and that “a monkey has been able to control the computer with his brain.”

In that presentation, Musk said that Neuralink is aiming to treat brain disorders, adding, “We can solve that with a chip.” He also said the he wants to assist people “preserve and enhance” their own brains as well as “create a well-aligned future.”

Musk has previously warned of the negative effects of a rapidly advanced artificial intelligence that could leave humanity obsolete and faced with an existential risk. He reiterated those claims on Tuesday, saying that humanity faces that risk “even in a benign AI scenario – hopefully, it is a benign scenario.”

He said that he wishes to find a way to “merge” the human brain with AI using tiny wireless chips that would be implanted to the brain via a 2-millimeter incision in order to form “some sort of symbiosis with artificial intelligence” so that humanity could secure a “future as a civilization relative to AI.”

Neuralink hopes to implant the first chip into a human brain before the end of 2020.

Musk noted that a large issue with this goal is the bandwidth required to transmit data but said, “With a high-bandwidth brain interface, I think we can have the option of merging with AI.”
