Earlier this week, the campaign of Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Indiana announced that it had raised $24.8 million dollars in its second quarter, over $3 million more than former Vice President and current Democratic frontrunner Joe Biden.
On Wednesday, Biden’s campaign announced that it had raised $21.5 million since his campaign launch in April.
Steve Westly, a Silicon Valley venture capitalist who is currently fundraising for Biden, said, “When you are the far and away frontrunner, everybody is shooting at you. One thing you have to keep in mind is this campaign is a marathon.”
Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders has so far raised $18 million. Candidates who have yet to announce their fundraising totals are Senators Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Kamala Harris of California, the latter who’s seen a surge in donations following her performance in the Democratic debates.
In an email to supporters on Monday, Biden’s campaign lauded the $21.5 million total as a win, saying it “blew our fundraising goal out of the water.”
