AOC and Democratic candidates react to “send her back” chants at Trump rally

July 18, 2019

On Thursday, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez responded to chants of “send her back” that erupted against Representative Ilhan Omar (D-Mn.) at a Trump Rally in North Carolina.

“The President put millions of Americans in danger last night,” Ocasio-Cortez told reporters on Capitol Hill. “It’s not just about threats to individual members of Congress, but it is about creating a volatile environment in this country through violent rhetoric that puts anyone like Ilhan, anyone who believes in the rights of all people, in danger. He has a responsibility for that environment.”

In response to the chants, Omar tweeted a poem by Maya Angelou.

“You may shoot me with your words, You may cut me with your eyes, You may kill me with your hatefulness, But still, like air, I’ll rise.”

2020 Democratic candidates have also responded to these chants, with former Vice President Joe Biden calling Trump’s actions “immoral.”

“It’s clear that Donald Trump is trying to divide us by race and gender,” wrote Biden. “It’s immoral. Our children are listening. These members of Congress – children of immigrants, just like so many of us – are an example of exactly what makes America great.”

Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Ma.) called Trump “desperate” and said that “calling out his racism, xenophobia, and misogyny is imperative.”

“The president is desperate,” Warren wrote. “Calling out his racism, xenophobia, and misogyny is imperative. But he’s trying to divide us and distract from his own crimes, and from his deeply unpopular agenda of letting the wealthy and well-connected rip off the country. We must do more.”

Senator Sanders (I-Vt.) wrote, “Trump knows that when we stand together and fight for racial, social, economic and environmental justice, we have the power to defeat him. So the demagogue is doing what he knows best: Divide and conquer through hate. His attacks only make us stronger.”

Senator Kamala Harris (D-Ca.) called the event “vile”, “cowardly”, and “racist.”

“It’s vile. It’s cowardly. It’s xenophobic. It’s racist. It defiles the office of the President. And I won’t share it here. It’s time to get Trump out of office and unite the country.”

Trump has since disavowed the “send her back” chants, saying, “I wasn’t happy with that message that they gave last night. I was not happy when I heard that chant.”
